As we age, it
is natural to want to protect our hard-earned assets.
Estate
Planning is the process of helping people prepare for the control and
disbursement of their estates. Estate plans generally include an array
of documents such as wills, trusts, letters of instruction, powers of
attorney, and advance directives. These documents ensure that your
specific wishes are carried out when you are not able to do so
yourself. Special circumstances may also require the use of
guardianships and conservatorships. Often, the process of making an
estate plan will also involve consideration of long-term care planning
and other elder law issues.
It is never
too early to prepare estate planning documents. However, it can be too
late. If you have not yet planned for your estate, now is the time.
Even if you have planned for your estate, your family situation may have
changed due to marriage, divorce, or the arrival of children or
grandchildren. If so, it is time to review and possibly change your
estate plan.
